Point Blue Conservation Science (Point Blue) is searching for an experienced fundraiser who can foster and grow relationships with foundations, corporations, and government agencies and increase funding to achieve the time-critical, climate-smart conservation initiatives in Point Blue’s Strategic Plan.
Point Blue is a growing and internationally renowned nonprofit with over160 staff and seasonal scientists. Our highest priority is to reduce the impacts of accelerating changes in climate, land-use and the ocean while promoting climate-smart conservation for a healthy future.
Point Blue advances conservation for wildlife and people through science, partnerships and outreach. Our scientists work closely with wildlife and habitat managers, private land owners, ranchers, farmers, other scientists, major conservation groups, and federal, state, and local government agencies and officials. We understand that real solutions come from working together.
Point Blue’s Grant Writer will be responsible for securing foundation and agency funding for our priority programs. Reporting to the Director of Institutional Philanthropy (Director), the Grant Writer will help maintain foundation and agency support at the current level of nearly $4 million annually. The Grant Writer will work in partnership with members of the advancement team and across the organization on donor-centered fundraising strategies.
Grow Point Blue’s funding base through strategic prospect identification, research, and cultivation of foundations, corporations, and government agencies in the region and nationally. Maintains and increases levels of support from current donors while bringing new funders into the fold to support discrete projects and/or ongoing work. Executes this work through coordinated research and strategy development with the Director, Advancement team, and Point Blue’s science staff leaders; reaching out to prospects and current/ongoing funders through phone calls, letters of inquiry, grant proposals and related communications materials, as well as meetings with donors that may involve other Advancement team members and/or Point Blue scientists. Attends Science for Donor meetings regularly and gains a detailed understanding of Point Blue initiatives. Conducts prospect research and manages a pipeline of prospects. Coordinates fundraising efforts with Advancement team.
Reporting and Data Management (20%)
Complies with and meets deadlines for reporting requirements concerning the progress and outcomes of funded projects and activities. Gathers comprehensive and accurate information on the outcomes and impacts of funded activities, coordinating internally with Science leads, finance, and other departments, and communicating externally to funders. Maintains accurate records in Raiser’s Edge and in donor files.
Peer Review, Professional Growth and Collaboration (10%)
Attends team meetings and trainings, and provides thought partnership to colleagues. Supports ongoing research and disseminates information internally as appropriate. Undertakes additional writing duties for the Advancement team as required. Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:
A successful Grant Writer will bring a combination of education and/or experience demonstrating abilities to work independently, manage complex and sensitive issues, prioritize, multitask, and demonstrate the following:
- At least 3 years of professional fundraising experience, or a combination of education and relevant professional experience, ideally for another conservation or scientific organization.
- Demonstrated ability to write successful five and sixfigure grant proposals.
- Thorough knowledge of the local, regional, and national funding landscape.
- Experience conducting extensive prospect research.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; flexibility, sense of humor, and cando attitude.
- Ability to manage multiple, simultaneous projects and deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
- Effective and efficient data management experience (Raiser’s Edge preferred).
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
Compensation will be competitive and dependent on experience. This full time position receives a generous benefits package including employer paid medical and dental coverage, and 401k match.
LOCATION AND SCHEDULE:
This position is located in our Petaluma, California headquarters in beautiful Sonoma County. The schedule is generally Monday through Friday, but the incumbent must have the ability to attend occasional evening and weekend events. Some out of area and overnight travel may be required.

- Regularly sits at a desk or computer workstation
- Frequently moves about the office to collaborate with colleagues
- Visual capacity to work with/at a computer station for extended periods of time.
- Occasionally lifts, carries or otherwise moves objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
- Occasional weekend and evening responsibilities
- Periodic travel; locally / nationally, but predominately within California
- May walk on uneven ground while working off-site
