The Field Biologists will assist in ecological monitoring on rangelands throughout California as part of the Rangeland Monitoring Network of Point Blue Conservation Science.

Duration: January – June, 2018.

Location:  Two positions have a flexible home base and include travel throughout California. Two positions are based in Pescadero and include travel to San Benito and Monterey counties.

Job Type: Full time – Seasonal (40+ hours per week)

Job Summary: This program partners with private landowners, land trusts, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and other state and federal agencies, as well as other non-profit organizations to monitor birds, plants, and soil on ranches and open space throughout California’s Central Valley, valley foothills, and central coast.

Essential Duties: The ideal candidate has a strong working knowledge of -- and enthusiasm for -- the ecology and natural history of California grassland, oak savanna, and shrubland ecosystems, including bird identification (by both sight and sound) and plant identification. This job involves traversing long distances through steep and uneven terrain and transporting up to 70 lbs.  Basic processing of soil samples (sifting, drying and grinding), entering data, and other office-based tasks are also significant components of this position.  The ability to build trust and work cooperatively with ranchers and other land managers will be critical. Self-motivation, the ability to work well alone and as a team, a sense of humor, and the desire to spend long hours in the field and office are essential.  The field schedule is variable and involves significant travel throughout California including some weekend work.  A valid driver's license, personal vehicle, and current proof of insurance are required. Use of personal vehicle will be reimbursed as per Point Blue’s expense reimbursement policy.

Pay Rate: $15/hour, including overtime pay according to California State law. Overtime hours will be a regular part of these positions.  Paid sick leave of 3 days per year; no other benefits are offered.
