Education and Outreach
As a Restoration and Outreach Technician with STRAW (Students & Teachers Restoring a Watershed), I work with our Project Managers, Technicians, and Interns in the planning, implementation, and maintenance of our wetland and riparian restoration sites throughout the Bay Area. On restoration days I help direct local student groups install native plants while providing information about site history and botany. I believe that this application of place based education helps foster passion and confidence about conservation within students and volunteers alike.
Originally hailing from the wild suburbia of Anchorage, Alaska, I came to STRAW from the forests of Maine as an intern in 2014. I graduated with degrees in Biology and Mathematics from Colby College in 2014, a small liberal arts school in central Maine. I've counted forest birds in Maine, digital crabs in Maryland, and tropical trees in Australia. Eventually, I fled the impending Maine winter and joined the STRAW team so that I could work in conservation and restoration year-round.
When not sprigging willows on a muddy ranch creek, I can be found podering plants at Green String or (poorly) plucking my banjo.
