Technical Product Manager

Position Summary

The Technical Product Manager will lead the requirements, design, implementation, roadmap, documentation, and support of our core data infrastructure and web applications that provide access to those data. This role closely collaborates with Point Blue employees and partners as the end users of these applications, working closely with other members of the Ecoinformatics Team to support scientific programs at Point Blue and in the wider conservation community.

Essential Functions:

Product Management: 50%

  • Works enthusiastically with internal science staff and external partners to assess needs in data management, curation, workflow, analysis, visualization, and sharing, and develop database and systems solutions.
  • Leads project teams in advancing the Point Blue Science Cloud, our web applications and data infrastructure, including modernizing, scaling, modeling, optimizing, and improving related business processes.
  • Leads project requirements gathering process, identifies resources required, and develops overall product timeline.
  • Works on a wide variety of projects in support of Point Blue’s mission and vision.
  • Provides online support and consulting for our existing customers and partners.
  • Works with internal and external partners in developing new projects.

Data Management: 45%

  • As a member of the Ecoinformatics engineering team, designs, codes, debugs, documents and supports database development projects as assigned, including data access middleware .
  • Works with the Ecoinformatics Engineering Manager on appropriate implementation, and to determine staffing and timelines needed to complete projects.
  • Responsible for database requirements development, needs assessments, testing, documentation, and maintenance.
  • Advances our database and warehouse strategies to ensure we’re always using the most appropriate solution, implementing industry and security best practices, and reducing infrastructure costs whenever possible.
  • Performs routine maintenance for existing projects.
  • Develops curriculum and leads training for our internal staff and external partners on the use of data-driven software and systems.

Administration: 5%

  • Lead and assists on project funding proposals and grant development when needed
  • Participates in Ecoinformatics and other team meetings, including daily standups, sprint planning, retrospective meetings.

Supervisory Responsibility:

None currently, but may manage staff in the future.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Communicates clearly, simply, and effectively.
  • Ability to work well with internal staff and external partners to understand and articulate their needs in solving the diverse problems they face, and design databases and other systems that meet those needs.
  • Complex Problem Solving: Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Ability to lead training with internal staff and external partners on the use of software and databases.
  • Ability to interact with and influence project stakeholders.
  • 5+ years of experience with SQL databases (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL), including data modeling and design (ERD/UML a plus), data curation, data warehousing, ETL, data standards (Federal, ISO). Familiarity with Amazon-specific SQL technologies is a plus.
  • 5+ years of experience with project management practices and demonstrated ability to run a project from concept through maintenance. Ability to gather user and product requirements and communicate those with the software team.
  • Experience with full-stack web application development using open source technologies, including Apache server, HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL or PostgreSQL, JavaScript, and JSON.
  • Experience with GIS and mapping tools, such as PostGIS, ESRI ArcMap, and GDAL is desirable. Experience with web GIS / mapping tools (such as OpenLayers or ArcGIS Online) is a plus.
  • Competency in Linux operating systems using bash terminal.
  • Experience in AWS platforms and services. Experience with Aurora and other AWS database platforms is a plus.
  • Passion for conservation and keen interest in the work of Point Blue. Background in ecology, natural sciences, or related fields is a plus.
  • Experience using data warehouses with R/Shiny a plus.

Preferred Education and Experience:

This position requires a combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field; and 5 years of experience in database management and architecture or related field.

Our primary system, the Point Blue Science Cloud, will soon be FedRAMP certified, and as a member of the engineering team for that offering, U.S. citizenship is a requirement.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • This position operates in a professional office environment
  • Routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, scanners, and filing cabinets
  • Work environment is indoors with majority of time spent sitting at a desk
  • Ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, walk, twist and turn
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to use a computer keyboard and calculator

Position Type, Expected Hours of Work, and Travel:

  • This is a full-time, position
  • Point Blue office hours are generally Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5pm Pacific Time. Most organizational meetings occur during these hours. Work schedules outside of these hours can be negotiated with the Informatics Engineering Manager
  • Point Blue’s headquarters is located in Petaluma, CA, however, this position could operate remotely or in a hybrid fashion
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand, but advance notice will be given in most circumstances.
  • Occasional travel is expected for this position

Point Blue Ecoinformatics and the Point Blue Science Cloud are positioned to increase the pace and scale of climate-smart conservation by generating innovative technical, analytical, and decision-support solutions to support Point Blue’s mission through our strategic initiatives, science, and partnerships. Point Blue hosts data management systems with over one billion ecological observations that have been used to publish scientific reports and papers, develop data visualization tools to explore these data, and collaboratively develop decision-support systems to bring data to guide conservation decision-making with stakeholders.
