"I joined the Science Advisory Committee and my wife and I became a supporters because we knew how outstanding the organization’s science work was and I was particularly excited and impressed that they wanted to grow their social science expertise. They understand that conservation is at its core a human behavior. They know that including more diverse civic input is key to increased conservation benefit for wildlife and the diversity of people in our communities. I view policy as an agreement that we enter into as a community or society, whether we have been included in its creation or not. My goal as a public policy scholar is to increase civic engagement in policy so that it better serves everyone. As I spoke with Point Blue’s scientists, I came to see more clearly how environmental conservation is also a type of policy. It encompasses different ways that we agree to restore, protect, and interact with natural ecosystems."
