As we celebrate 60 years of impactful conservation science, we’re looking forward to a more powerfully connected future with all of you. From our bird observatory roots in West Marin County, California beginning on March 18, 1965 to our headquarter move to Petaluma in 2006 to our place on the international conservation stage as an official observer at the UN Climate Conferences starting in 2017, we are proud of what we’ve accomplished and we are grateful to our community for helping us grow along the way. We need each other now more than ever. That’s why we’ve chosen to lean into connection over the next 5 years and beyond. Read more about our new strategy here.
Science matters. Collaboration is essential. Proactive invitation and shared learning are a must. We invite you to connect with us in six ways to celebrate six decades of conservation:
Act, Celebrate, Dream, Give, Learn, and Restore.
Act
There are many ways for us to act individually and in community to protect nature and further conservation action. Here are just a couple:
Make your voice heard.
Communicate often with your congressional representatives and tell them to support the conservation efforts. You can find your Representatives and their contact information here and your Senators here. Sometimes you will find form letters from us on specific issues but there are also general guides available such as this one from the UC Berkely Library.
Be a community scientist.
Join fellow community scientists and take part in the Pacific Flyway or Intermountain West Shorebird Survey and count birds to track change and inform policy. Keep an eye on our volunteer and events pages for more opportunities.
Partner with us.
Whether you’re a scientist, artist, educator, philanthropist, or anyone else with a concern for the future, we are open to collaborating towards shared goals. Reach out and connect with us at info@pointblue.org.
Celebrate
Connecting for Conservation: Honoring Point Blue’s 60th Anniversary
Thank you to all who joined our anniversary celebration on Saturday, May 17th, 2025. It was a joyous evening filled with delicious food, signature drinks, and deepening connection as we honored 60 years of conservation and community. This milestone is a tribute to everyone who has been part of our journey—let’s gather in gratitude, reflect on the impact we’ve made, and find inspiration in the path ahead.
Bird-A-Thon Celebration in January 2026
Many of you participated in our 47th Annual Rich Stallcup Bird-A-Thon this year from September 15th to October 15th. Keep your eye out for an invite in January for a post-Bird-A-Thon celebration. Think you might not be on the list? Contact us at birdathon@pointblue.org.
Dream
Most action comes from the dreams and visions that we cultivate on our own or in community. Our vision is that because of the conservation work we do today, we’ll see thriving ecosystems that provide multiple benefits to wildlife and people for generations to come.
What’s your dream?
How can we lean into partnership and focus on shared goals that benefit all? Connect with the ways you value nature and share your vision of a thriving future for wildlife and people on social media with hashtag #ConnectedConservation. Tag us @pointblue_conservationscience on Instagram, @pointblue.bsky.social on Bluesky, or @PointBlueConservationScience on Facebook and we’ll amplify your dreams!
Give
Be part of the solution by investing in a healthy planet. Contribute to conservation efforts in California from the Sierra to the sea, across the Pacific flyway, throughout the country and globe through powerful partnership, and as far as Antarctica. Invest in the future and be part of a resilient connected conservation legacy. Connect your dollars to living and lasting impact!
Here are ways to give:

Restore
One of the most powerful ways to connect with nature and community is through community-based habitat restoration. Point Blue is a leader in design, monitoring, and implementation through our six decades of collaboration and the award-winning STRAW or Students and Teachers Restoring A Watershed, a program that’s been at Point Blue since 2011.
Ongoing involvement
If you’d like to be involved in restoring habitats on an ongoing basis, become a volunteer with our Novato Baylands team. Send an email to novatobaylands@pointblue.org to learn how to sign up and when trainings happen. Read more about Point Blue’s role at the Novato Baylands with our partners at the California State Coastal Conservancy here.
Also, don’t forget about the little things. Researching and planting native plants around your home, work, or school makes a difference! Scroll to our Climate-smart restoration toolkit for guidance on a big or small scale effort.
Get Involved
You can help the environment and support our work in lots of ways: becoming a conservation volunteer, attending our events, or following and sharing our blogs and newsletters.
