Ellen Hines

Director

Dr. Hines is a Professor Emeritus in the School of the Environment at San Francisco State University. She recently led the writing of the chapter on marine mammals for the latest UN World Ocean Assessment, is a member of the IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Area Task Force and an invited expert on the Convention on Migratory Species Scientific Council’s Aquatic Animals Working Group. She is the Chair of the Expert Panel on Vessel Strikes and a member of the Expert Panel for the Bycatch Mitigation Initiative for the International Whaling Commission.  She is currently the Chair of the Sanctuary Advisory Council for the Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary. Her research addresses population and community ecology of threatened and endangered species as related to local conservation efforts and regional scale coastal and marine management science. She is particularly interested in using geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing as tools for marine conservation and works closely with Point Blue’s marine scientists.
