Adélie Penguins: Their Past, Present and Future in a Changing Antarctica

7:00 PM

Zoom

Join Point Blue’s Chief Science Officer, Grant Ballard, PhD, for his presentation to the Marin Audubon Society. Point Blue has monitored the Adélie penguins of Antarctica for decades, witnessing firsthand the profound effects of climate change, including the recent, rapid decline in Ross Sea ice that is now threatening their survival. Grant Ballard is responsible for shaping and growing Point Blue’s multi-investigator scientific research and conservation programs, overseeing 160 staff scientists, educators and restoration practitioners. He will share recent research made possible by their advanced technology and extensive, multi-decade datasets, including new findings into the evolutionary past of penguins, providing a deep understanding of these incredible birds. He will show how comparing their ancient history with their current condition and challenges can teach us about the unique and globally important Southern Ocean ecosystem.
