Join Sonoma State University for the world premiere of Thom Limbert’s composition, Songscapes by the Sonoma State Symphonic Wind Ensemble, directed by Dr. Andy Collinsworth. Thom Limbert, Director of the Composition Program at Sonoma State, is a composer, percussionist, music technologist, and audio engineer whose work explores temporality, technology and performance, global and popular music aesthetics, and acoustic ecology, often drawing inspiration from natural soundscapes. Thom’s composition will be the penultimate piece on a wonderful program of wind band music. Songscapes is scored for a large, symphonic collection of woodwinds, brass, and percussion, accompanied by electronic sounds. The musical inspiration of the piece is derived from field recordings made as part of Soundscapes to Landscapes, a Sonoma County biodiversity study to which he was connected through his SSU colleague Dr. Matt Clark and researchers at Point Blue. The piece progresses through several episodic musical impressions of the birdsong and other natural sounds he discovered as part of the study.
